An offensive explosion from the Thorold Anchors (9-10) led to a decisive 14-4 victory on Tuesday night at McMillan Park against the St. Catharines Cobras (4-17).
Every member of the starting lineup contributed with at least one hit or one run batted in for Thorold in a balanced attack Tuesday. In total, the Anchors collected 14 hits which tied a season high.
Thorold got the scoring started in the bottom of the first inning when Nick Koenigsberger hustled a fly ball into right field from a single into a double that scored Dylan Dempsey and Mark Suntz. The Cobras however did strike back with three runs of their own in the top of the second off of starter DJ Kuijer that temporarily gave St. Catharines the lead.
Thorold would go on to take the lead however in the bottom of the second for good when the team sent 10 men to the plate in a four-run inning highlighted by runs batted in by Drew Timlock, Jacob Turner, Suntz and Koenigsberger.
Koenigsberger would then tack onto his impressive night with a bases clearing double in the third inning to bring his total on the night to six runs batted in. Overall, Koenigsberger went 3 for 3 with two walks, 6 rbi and eventually scored the game winning run to complete the mercy rule victory in the sixth inning.
Other Anchors with multi hit performances Tuesday night included Dempsey who went 3 for 4 with four runs scored, Nolan Procyshyn who went 2 for 4 with two runs scored and a stolen base and Drew Timlock who went 2 for 3 with two runs scored.
On the mound, reliever Braydon Procyshyn picked up his first Anchors victory in his first ever appearance with the team. Braydon joined his brothers Dalton and Nolan on the Anchors this season and battled back from a preseason injury to make his debut with the team this week. Braydon pitched two scoreless innings Tuesday night while extinguishing the Cobras rally in the second inning and collected two strikeouts and two walks along the way.
Justin Vescio-West and Nicholas Gambell combined to pitch the last three innings for Thorold. Vescio-West pitched two innings striking out two while allowing one run and Gambell threw a scoreless sixth inning striking out one Cobra.
The Anchors will host the undefeated league leading Beamsville Yellow Jackets (19-0) tonight at 6pm at McMillan Park in a rare Saturday night matchup before heading to George Taylor Field in St Catharines for a doubleheader Sunday against the Merritton Alliance (7-13). The doubleheader starts at 11am Sunday morning with game two following one half hour after the completion of game one.
