The Thorold Anchors (2-2) knocked the Welland Pioneers (5-1) from the ranks of the unbeaten in the NDBA Senior Baseball League on Tuesday night at McMillan Park with a 5-3 victory.
The Anchors offense started early with a pair of runs in the first and third innings. In the first inning, Max Dobrowolski got the action going with a laser single off of shortstop Boston Lynch into centrefield that scored Dalton Procyshyn. Drew Timlock followed with an rbi groundout to second base that scored Mark Suntz to push the lead to 2-0 after the first.
Thorold then tacked on two more runs in the third with Dobrowolski contributing an rbi triple to centre and Timlock an rbi double to right-centre. Thorold’s last run for the evening was scored in the fourth when Dalton Procyshyn singled into centre to score Nolan Procyshyn after Nolan had picked up his first stolen base of the season.
Thorold starter Kyle D’Angela picked up the victory by keeping the Welland offense in check over a strong four and a third innings. D’Angela scattered six hits during his start and struck out three Pioneers while getting charged for two earned runs. A pivotal moment came in the second inning when Welland loaded the bases with one out on three singles but D’Angela was able to escape the jam when he struck out Nick Schwab and got Dennis Martin to pop out to catcher Dylan Dempsey.
The Anchors bullpen was once again a strength with Aiden Schonewille, Justin Vescio-West and Andrew D’Angelo combining for two and two third innings to close the game. Schonewille picked up a hold by retiring the last two outs in the fifth in relief of D’Angela allowing an unearned run in the process. Vescio-West worked a clean sixth inning striking out one Pioneer for a hold on his 32nd birthday. Finally, D’Angelo shut the door to earn his first career Anchors save in an eventful seventh inning that included a pickoff of pinch runner Jose Rodriguez at first base and two strikeouts including Schwab swinging to emphatically end the ball game in a lively atmosphere.
Next up the Anchors travelled to St. Catharines on Thursday for a matchup with the Cobras.
A third consecutive win pushed the Thorold Anchors (3-2) above the .500 mark for the first time this season after a 10-3 victory over the St. Catharines Cobras on Thursday night at George Taylor Field.
Thorold scored a run in the top of the first inning on an rbi ground out from Mark Suntz but St. Catharines struck back with two runs in the bottom of the first courtesy of a Jordan Clinch two run double to left centrefield to make the score 2-1 St. Catharines.
The Anchors tied the game in the top of the third when Robbie Denham picked up an infield single and then advanced to third on an errant pickoff attempt during the next at bat. Denham would then use his speed to take home on a passed ball to make the score 2-2.
Thorold would take the lead for good in the top of the fourth inning on the first of three hits from rookie Carter Sentence. Sentence would ultimately go 3 for 4 on the night with an rbi and three runs scored while also picking up two stolen bases. The Anchors would score three in the fourth, three in the sixth and two in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
Thorold opener DJ Kuijer tossed one and a third innings striking out two Cobras while walking two and giving up two earned runs before giving way to bulk pitcher Luke Edwards. Edwards kept St. Catharines off balance almost the rest of the way pitching into the seventh inning getting charged with just one earned run while giving way to Nicholas Gambell who finished off the game by striking out Michael Desy.
