The Thorold Anchors ended an historic season by making it to their first NDBA Senior League Championship Series where they would ultimately fall to the three-time defending champion Beamsville Yellow Jackets.
Thorold claimed second place in the regular season standings for their highest finish in league history ending with a franchise record of 15 wins against 9 losses. The Anchors also set numerous other team records during the season highlighted by a high-octane offense that produced 193 total runs scored which was good for just over 8 runs per game.
Thorold kicked off their playoff run by defeating the Fort Erie Cannons in the opening round, 2 games to 1. Fort Erie won game 1 in Thorold in extra innings by the score of 10-4. Fort Erie escaped a bases loaded with nobody out jam in the bottom of the seventh to push the game to extras where they would score six in the ninth to push the Anchors to the brink of elimination.
Game 2 in Fort Erie saw the Cannons take a 6-3 lead into the top of the sixth inning when the Thorold bats finally woke up to the tune of a seven-run inning that righted the ship and paved the way for a 13-10 victory to push the series to a decisive game 3.
Game 3 in Thorold saw the Anchors win by the score of 6-4. Fort Erie took a 3-0 lead into the first inning but were unable to hold the lead thanks in part to a bases clearing double from Drew Timlock in the third inning that would give Thorold a 4-3 lead that they would not relinquish.
The semifinals saw Thorold conquer the Niagara Falls Expos in a best of 5 series by the count of 3 games to 2. In much the same way the first round series went, the Anchors were pushed to the brink of elimination with the Expos winning games 1 and 2 to setup a potential sweep.
Games 3 and 4 in Niagara Falls went the way of the Anchors though with a pair of victories by the scores of 6-3 and 7-3. Game 5 was a masterclass from veteran Thorold starter Kyle D’Angela who launched the Anchors into the championship series with a complete game four hitter allowing just one run on one walk while striking out eight Expos.
The championship round proved to be too much for Thorold however as the Beamsville Yellow Jackets knocked off the Anchors 3 games to 0. Thorold held a 3-1 lead in game 1 headed into the sixth inning when things unravelled for the Anchors when the Yellow Jackets scored 5 runs to take the lead for good. The long playoff run seemingly had caught up with Thorold as games 2 and 3 were fairly one sided as Beamsville won the two games by scores of 7-1 and 13-2.
Thorold is looking to build on their successful 2025 season with championship aspirations heading into 2026.
