Anchors Celebrate Canada Day With Big Win

It was a victorious Canada Day matinee for the Thorold Anchors (8-4) as they defeated the Fort Erie Cannons (3-7) by the score of 15-0 after four innings. It was a record setting performance for the Anchors as the 15-run margin of victory is the largest in franchise history. At the halfway mark of their season the Anchors sit atop the NDBA Senior League standings with 16 points.

Thorold’s improved defense this season was on full display on Tuesday afternoon with highlight reel plays all over the diamond. The top of the first inning saw centrefielder Nolan Procyshyn double off the stealing Zach Fernandez on a bang-bang play back at first on the strength of a great scoop from first baseman Dan Smith. In the fourth inning, third baseman Mark Suntz made a diving play to his right to rob Chris Patterson of a single when he popped up and made the throw from foul territory to get Patterson in time.

Starter Ben Dobrowolski (2-1) pitched a complete game for Thorold on just 49 pitches registering 36 for strikes. Dobrowolski scattered three hits over four innings while striking out four Cannons.

Thorold got the scoring started in the second inning off of starter Josh Kuderian (1-1). An rbi single from designated hitter Max Dobrowolski to right field that scored Dylan Dempsey got the proceedings started. In all, the Anchors sent 12 men to the plate and chased Kuderian from the game after one and two-thirds innings giving up eight earned runs on seven hits. The highlight of the inning was Drew Timlock scoring all the way from first on a Dempsey double to right centrefield. When reached for comment after the inning Timlock said quote, “running sucks”. Thorold led 8-0 after two innings.

The train kept rolling in the third inning where Thorold loaded the bases with nobody out. Mark Suntz hit a deep sacrifice fly to bring the score to 9-0 and the Anchors tacked on three more runs to bring the score to 12-0 after three.

Thorold would once again load the bases to start the decisive fourth inning which saw JJ Weller pick up his first rbi of the season on a bases loaded walk to bring the score to 13-0. The Anchors would invoke the mercy rule as Dylan Dempsey shot a line drive into right field to score the Procyshyn brothers to end the game.

Tuesday was Thorold’s first shutout since their OBA “C” Championship Final against the Tillsonburg Red Sox on September 17, 2022 and first NDBA shutout since July 27, 2022 against Welland. Thorold’s offense has already scored 106 runs this season at the season’s halfway mark. By comparison, the Anchors scored 106 runs in the 2022 season and 108 runs in 2023 campaign for the entire regular season. Thorold's improved offense and defense has led to the 8-4 start enjoyed by the team.

Thorold will face off against the defending league champion Beamsville Yellow Jackets (7-1) on Friday night in Beamsville. The Yellow Jackets are riding a 31-game home winning streak dating back to a 6-2 loss on June 9, 2023 against the Anchors. The Yellow Jackets won the opening matchup this season by the score of 7-2 but Thorold will be looking to push their win streak to six games and extend their lead atop the NDBA Senior League standings. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30pm.
