The Thorold Anchors (1-3) dropped their third consecutive outing this season by surrendering a 4-1 loss to the Welland Pioneers (3-3) on Sunday night at Welland Stadium.
The Pioneers did most of their damage in the top of the first off of starter Luke Edwards (0-1). A leadoff walk followed by three hits allowed Welland to take a 3-0 advantage heading into the second inning. Welland added another run in the top of the second on an rbi single by Mark Jaroslawski to make the score 4-0.
Pioneers starter Juan Cisnero (1-1) made quick work of the Anchors in both the first and second innings before yielding a two out rbi double to Max Dobrowolski in the top of the third frame which would be the Anchors only run of the contest.
Relievers Jeremy Pysher and Will Newton combined to shut the door on the Anchors for the last three innings with Newton picking up his first save of the season by throwing a 1-2-3 seventh inning.
Leading the way for Thorold on Sunday night offensively were Max Dobrowolski, Drew Timlock, Kevin Hastie and Adam Bartlett who all collected one hit apiece. Robbie Denham also swiped two bases.
Reliever Ben Dobrowolski fired three innings of shutout ball with one strikeout and one hit allowed to keep the Anchors within reach. Ultimately, the three-run lead proved too much for the Thorold offense to overcome.
The Anchors will look to breaking their three-game losing streak on Tuesday night in Thorold in a battle against the Merritton Alliance (1-4). First pitch is scheduled for 7:30pm.
