Anchors Prepare for Alliance Threat 

The Thorold Anchors (1-2) will be looking to right the ship as they host the Merritton Alliance (1-2) on Tuesday night at McMillan Park in Downtown Thorold. 

The Anchors are coming off a hard fought 5-3 loss Friday night at the hands of the league leading Beamsville Yellow Jackets (4-0).

“The game the other night was a good ball game on the road, that’s a tough 1 through 9 lineup over there,” said manager Aaron McInnis. “The staff was very happy with Smitty’s (Dan Smith) first start, we thought he pitched very well. There were 5 or 6 at bats during the game where the compete level during some at bats could have been better, it wasn’t where it needed to be, but we can hold ourselves accountable for that. I can take a 5-3 loss on the road to Beamsville early in the season and move past it.”

The Alliance, last season’s playoff semifinalists, had some roster turnover from 2023. Most notably, Merritton lost Cole Cote to the Intercounty Baseball League’s Welland Jackfish. The Alliance return a veteran group with some added youth looking to make a name for themselves in the NDBA. 

“Coming into Tuesday back at home we always like our chances at home. Merritton is a tough team to play against, they make you earn it, they show up and play a full seven innings,” said McInnis. “The players will be looking to win just the next game and the coaching staff has to take a slightly different approach because of the back-to-back against Fort Erie. You might see some more of the bench used and our bullpen is well rested going into this week. We definitely want to take the first game at home and then go on the road Wednesday and see what happens against a very good Fort Erie squad.”
