Anchors Win Wild Walk-off in Home Opener
The Thorold Anchors were victorious in their home opener in walk-off fashion on Tuesday night, 6-5, over the St. Catharines Cobras.
The game was scoreless into the sixth when the Cobras scored the opening run on a Nick Sousa single into centrefield that scored Joe Meisner.
Thorold answered back in the bottom of the sixth scoring 4 runs to break the game open.
However, St. Catharines took the lead in the top of the seventh after Ryan Gacnik singled, scoring one run, and Xavier Whittle homered on a no doubt shot to left field.
The Anchors earned the victory in the bottom of the seventh with a two run rally capped by Tony Brown reaching first base on a dropped third strike that scored Nick Schwab.
Mark Suntz earned the win for Thorold Anchors after blowing the save in top of the seventh inning. The righty surrendered three hits and four runs over one inning, striking out two and walking one. Blair McNeill took the loss for St.Catharines Cobras. The reliever went one-third of an inning, surrendering two runs on one hit, striking out one and walking two.
Luke Edwards started for the Anchors and delivered four strong innings. “We have a lot of confidence with Luke to handle his business the right way and you can’t discount Schwabby (Nick Schwab) back there, he called a great game,” said manager Aaron McInnis. “Luke always give us a chance to win and that’s what he did.” The lefty allowed three hits and zero runs while striking out two, walking two and hitting one batter.
Schwab led the Anchors with two hits and Tony Brown drove in two runs. “I have a lot of confidence in this offense,” said McInnis. “I liked where we were in the lineup and I thought the boys would push through the adversity of the top of the seventh and come through in the clutch.”
Next up for the Thorold Anchors (1-1) is a road trip out of town to the Beamsville Yellow Jackets (2-0) on Friday. St. Catharines returns to action on Thursday when they host the 0-1 Niagara Falls Expos.
